The colossal candy bar tips the scales at 12, 190 pounds, and contains 5,500 pounds of sugar and 1,700 pounds of cocoa butter. Created by World’s Finest Chocolate in Chicago, IL, it’s the centerpiece of their “Think Big, Eat Smart” tour to promote healthy eating habits and fitness habits among American students.
“With the many problems with childhood obesity and obesity in general, they wanted to make sure that they’re not part of the problem,” said Sarah Lynn Brannan, the tour’s director. “They want to be part of the solution.”
The tour crew spent time talking to students about leading a healthy lifestyle, and presented a video about the origins of the giant chocolate bar. They also led the students in a choreographed exercise routine.
Winidsor Hills senior Courtney Rodriguez knows all about healthy food choices but admits chocolate is hard to resist.
“If I had to choose from chocolate and actually healthy food I would probably choose my chocolate,” said Rodriguez.
The “Think Big, Eat Smart” tour was right on time for Windsor Hills. The school, which has raised over three million dollars selling World’s Finest, starts its sales this week.
The big bar was too large to take into the school’s gym, so the students had to wait until the presentation was over to get an up-close look at it outside. Students lined the candy bar from end to end, with the younger ones asking Brannan the most questions.
“What they’re trying to do is raise awareness, letting them know that treats are okay, as long as it’s in moderation,” said Brannan. “The giant chocolate bar is really to make the message more memorable and get the kids’ attention.”
