Who knew? Chocolate really is a drug!

M&Ms Milk Chocolate

We all love a bit of chocolate every now and then. Infact for many of us chocolate is something we have long since found very difficult to resist. Often we jokingly refer to its addictive properties to deflect from our attempts to succumb to it, but now, recent research has concluded this might actually be true.

According to researchers from the University of Michigan there is a clear link in the urge that rats have to overindulge in chocolate morsels to a part of the brain that produces a ‘natural, opium-like chemical’.

Apparently the brain has ‘more extensive systems to make individuals want to overconsume rewards than previously thought’ says head research Alexandra DiFeliceantonio, which ‘may be one of the reasons overconsumption is a problem today’.

In the study, drugs were administered to the rats to boost the part of the brain called the neostriatum. Once that part of the brain was stimulated, the rats were found to gorge themselves on more than twice the number of M&M chocolates than they otherwise would normally have eaten.

Researchers also found that enkephalin, a natural drug-like chemical that is produced in that same part of the brain, also rose when rats began to eat the candy-coated morsels.

DiFeliceantonio ‘s team were keen to point out though that the drugs didn’t make the rats like chocolate more, but rather elicited certain brain chemicals to increase their desire and impulse to eat them.

Kyle Busch Loses M&M Sponsorship For Rest Of 2011 Racing Season

14 Nov

Kyle Busch's M&M CarWith two races left to go during the 2011 Sprint Cup Season M&M has dropped its sponsorship of NASCAR driver Kyle Busch.

M&M pulled their sponsorship of the No. 18 car for races at Phoenix and Homestead-Miami after Busch’s actions at last Friday’s Truck Series race in Texas put him in hot water. Replacing the M&M logo for the last two races will be Interstate Batteries.

Speaking about the situation Debra A. Sandler, chief consumer officer, Mars Chocolate North America told Yahoo Sports:

“Kyle’s recent actions are unacceptable and do not reflect the values of Mars … While we do not condone Kyle’s recent actions, we do believe that he has shown remorse and has expressed a desire to change. We believe our decision will have a positive impact on Kyle and will help him return next season ready to win.”

While the sponsorship pull isn’t the best news Busch could receive it’s better than the other possible outcome, Joe Gibbs Racing had contacted Aric Almirola as a possible replacement for Busch during the final two Sprint Cup races of the 2011 season.

M&M isn’t pulling out completely, releasing the following statement on Thursday:

“The car will not run with the M&M’s paint scheme until 2012, at which time Kyle Busch will be the driver with the expectation that no future incident take place.”

In responding to the company’s statement team owner Joe Gibbs said:

“We strongly support Mars’ decision … This gives us all time to work together to foster a positive change where Kyle can continue racing in a way we can all be proud of.”

NASCAR this week forced Kyle Busch to pay a $50,000 fine after he purposefully wrecked Ron Hornaday’s truck in last weeks race.

Gibbs and Busch will speak to members of the media on Friday morning at the Phoenix International Raceway.

Snickers Bar. Available to buy online in Australia from Moo-Lolly-Bar. To do that just click on this image. We’ve all got our favorites when it comes to Halloween candy. Snickers, Butterfinger, M&Ms. To paraphrase Homer Simpson, “Mmmmmmm, candy.”

But when you paw through that stash of Halloween candy and pull out your favorites, did you know that your choice of treat screams volumes about your personality? Well, we didn’t either, until we had too much pre-Halloween candy and invented the theory.

So say hello to our sugar-induced candyscope, and don’t overindulge in the coming days.

If you go for double Ms, you tend to separate your socks by color and have abnormally clean hands.

Sign of indecisiveness. Do you want chocolate? Do you want nuts? You don’t know. Or do you?

You’re kind and considerate, but we wouldn’t trust you to carry the family china.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups:
You have hidden talents and are a deep thinker. You like to do things in pairs.

Gummy bears:
Sweet, cuddly and loving, but people often find you sticking to the ceiling, which makes you an inappropriate guest for parties that include a pinata.

Sour Patch:
You’re bitter and abrasive and good at making people cry.

You are loved by most people and live a simple, plain and unassuming life.

Junior Mints:
You have a refreshing and zippy personality, but you suffer from an inferiority complex.
