One of Mars Incorporated’s best selling chocolate bars, 3 Musketeers has enjoyed widespread popularity ever since it burst onto the confectionery scene back in 1932.

Originally packaged as three different flavours – chocolate, strawberry and vanilla, hence the inspiration for the name – the product changed to its current format of a light, fluffy bar of chocolate flavored nougat smothered in milk chocolate during the war, as a result of cost cutting measures and an adaption to wartime rations on sugar.

Manufactured in three separate facilities across North America including Chicago in Illinois, Elizabethtown in Pennsylvania and Newmarket in Canada, the product is made in very specific stages. Firstly the nougat centre is created by painstakingly whipping egg whites until they are light and frothy. After that sugar syrup is introduced to the mix which acts to create a stabilizing ‘frappe’ effect. Once this has been achieved and a selection of other flavouring ingredients are added to the frappe, the mix is then formed into extremely large slabs which are then cut to size. Now properly formed the centres are enrobed with milk chocolate via a process whereupon they pass through a flowing waterfall of chocolate liquid. Congruently, a rotating chocolate covered wheel which is situated beneath the mesh belt coats the base of the bar.

When 3 Musketeers first went on sale they cost five cents and were proudly advertised as one of the largest chocolate bars on the market at that time and one you could share with family or friends. Nowadays however, the marketing message has changed somewhat to reflect its current positioning as a ‘Nice, Light Snack’ that features ‘45% less fat’ than other chocolate bars currently available.

Mars Chocolate North America Unwraps New Solar Garden at Ethel M Chocolate Factory

The state-of-the-art solar installation provides 100 percent of the electrical energy to the Ethel Ms plant during peak operating hours.

The project’s completion was commemorated with a ribbon-cutting event attended by state and local government officials, executives from NV Energy, juwi solar Inc. (JSI), and Mars Chocolate North America leaders.

“At Mars Chocolate North America, we have the opportunity to make a difference in the world,” said Mike Wittman, vice president of supply. “We are proud of the investments we are making to ensure we are using the earth’s resources responsibly. This newest solar garden moves us closer to our goals of eliminating our carbon footprint at our sites by 2040 and using 100 percent renewable energy.”

The new Ethel M factory solar garden features 2,112 ground-mounted solar panels on 4.4 acres, and is the largest solar installation by a food manufacturer in Nevada. The installation generates 1,258 megawatt hours of zero-emission electricity each year, offsetting 867 metric tons of greenhouse gas – the equivalent of removing approximately 170 vehicles from the road. The project will generate as much energy as 115 Nevada households use annually.

Mars will purchase all of the energy generated by the solar garden and JSI will own the project and its associated energy credits. Mars worked closely with NV Energy to ensure that the new installation met net metering requirements, enabling Mars to receive energy offsets from the utility based on the amount of energy their solar panels will produce.

“Turning one of the desert’s greatest assets into energy is in complete alignment with Mars’ Principles in Action, our core business values,” said Mack Phillips, site director of the Henderson plant. “Two years ago we unveiled a similar solar project at our North American headquarters in Hackettstown, NJ, and its impact on our operations has been substantial.”

“This is the second solar PV project built by juwi solar on Mars-owned property,” said Michael Martin, CEO of JSI. “We are proud to play a role in advancing environmental and sustainability goals by replacing the grid’s brown power with green power generated onsite.”

The solar garden is adjacent to the chocolate factory and Ethel M’s Botanical Cactus Garden. A vista point located within the Botanical Cactus Garden will allow the more than 700,000 annual visitors to view the new solar facility.

“We are fortunate to have been a part of the Henderson and Las Vegas community for more than 30 years,” said Phillips. “We hope the completion of our solar garden demonstrates our continuing commitment to be an environmentally friendly citizen. Our goal is that every business decision we make will have a positive effect on people and the planet through our performance. This project achieves all three.”

Mars says 10 pct of cocoa sustainable this year

To go there just click on this photo!Chocolate-maker Mars said it was on track to buy 10 percent of its cocoa from sources certified as sustainable this year, and was working to increase that to 100 percent by 2020, though supply remained constrained.

In a statement late on Wednesday, Mars said it had partnered with the Rainforest Alliance and UTZ Good Inside with the aim of meeting 200,000 tonnes a year by the end of this decade.

Consumers, especially in Western countries, are increasingly demanding products certified as sustainable, as awareness grows of the impact their consumption has on the environment and the mostly poor workers who provide the raw materials.

Labels like the Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade provide markets in rich countries — often at premium prices — for producers in developing states who adopt environmentally sound cultivation methods or labour policies that promote development.

Once niche brands, their market share has surged.

“Mars is working to certify 100 percent of our cocoa as sustainable by 2020, and we’ve already partnered with Rainforest Alliance and UTZ Good Inside to meet 200,000 metric tons of our projected annual cocoa supply by that time,” Andrew D. Harner, Global Cocoa Director for Mars Chocolate, said.
