Chocolate Affair sweetens pot for AIDS Assistance Program

12 Nov

Chocolate AffairLast week’s Chocolate Affair was a joint venture between Cliff Young’s popular “Out To Eat” TV show on public station KVCR and Jeff Shotwell and Scott Jones of Imagine It! Media. The event served as a benefit for AIDS Assistance Program.

The trio organized the event, which was held at the Spa Resort Casino Hotel in downtown Palm Springs, and secured the cooperation of about 18 chocolate makers and vendors, including Los Angeles’ Chocolatique, San Diego’s David Bacco Chocolatier, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, ChocoVine, Over the Rainbow Cupcakes, Harry & David, Lulu California Bistro, Red Tomato and House of Lamb, Sherman’s Deli, The Steakhouse, Three Sixty North, Brandini Toffee and Billy Reed’s Restaurant.

Unlike some chocolate tasting events where the lines are long and they run out of samples, there was almost no waiting at this event — and the supplies never ran low. In addition to the expected fudge, icings,

chunks of toffee and truffles, there were unique chocolate drinks.

One of the most popular drinks was the nonalcoholic liquid chocolate martini offered by Sherman’s Deli in Palm Springs and Palm Desert. Guests were given sample-size plastic martini glasses being filled from a triple-deck fountain of foaming chocolate.

There was also a refreshing chocolate-mint flavored water, Metro Mint, available in most local supermarkets, and a unique chocolate beer, Hangar 24’s Chocolate Porter, which made its debut at the event.

Then, just a few steps away was a table of three chocolate flavored wines by ChocoVine. The samples, which packed a 14 percent alcohol punch, were understandably small but utterly delicious.

They can be purchased at BevMo in La Quinta.

Shotwell said they would like to make this a semi-annual event for AIDS Assistance Program.

Each guest paying the $25 admission fee was given a “Peoples’ Choice” voting card to drop in the box of their favorite chocolate vendor.

The top award went to local bakery Over the Rainbow Cupcakes & Deserts, with Brandini Toffee and David Bacco Chocolatier tying for second place.

Best decorated booth went to Sherman’s Deli for its martini fountain and embossed logo chocolates.

Lulu California Bistro came in a close second with its chic and stylish booth decorated in orange and turquoise.

The event drew approximately 250 chocolate lovers of all ages, sizes and lifestyles.

Among them were Barbara and Jerry Keller of LuLu and Acqua Pazza along with their general manager, Willie Rhine, Cricket Prescott of KPSP Local 2 with her mom, Karen Prescott, Gloria Greer and daughter Norma Fishkind, Mona Caywood, Denise Carter, Mark Anton and Scott Histed.

Proceeds from the event will help fund bimonthly food vouchers for the more than 500 local men, women and children affected by HIV and AIDS.
