Who knew? Chocolate really is a drug!

M&Ms Milk Chocolate

We all love a bit of chocolate every now and then. Infact for many of us chocolate is something we have long since found very difficult to resist. Often we jokingly refer to its addictive properties to deflect from our attempts to succumb to it, but now, recent research has concluded this might actually be true.

According to researchers from the University of Michigan there is a clear link in the urge that rats have to overindulge in chocolate morsels to a part of the brain that produces a ‘natural, opium-like chemical’.

Apparently the brain has ‘more extensive systems to make individuals want to overconsume rewards than previously thought’ says head research Alexandra DiFeliceantonio, which ‘may be one of the reasons overconsumption is a problem today’.

In the study, drugs were administered to the rats to boost the part of the brain called the neostriatum. Once that part of the brain was stimulated, the rats were found to gorge themselves on more than twice the number of M&M chocolates than they otherwise would normally have eaten.

Researchers also found that enkephalin, a natural drug-like chemical that is produced in that same part of the brain, also rose when rats began to eat the candy-coated morsels.

DiFeliceantonio ‘s team were keen to point out though that the drugs didn’t make the rats like chocolate more, but rather elicited certain brain chemicals to increase their desire and impulse to eat them.

Lindt unveil a new limited edition Mocha Coconut Dark Chocolate bar

27 Nov

Buy Lindt Chocolate Online at Moo-Lolly-Bar AustraliaThose much loved chocolate maestros Lindt & Sprϋngli USA has recently teamed up with those geniuses at The Culinary Institute of America to launch a new, exclusive, limited edition chocolate bar.

The rather delicious sounding Mocha Coconut Dark Chocolate Bar was created during a recent Lindt EXCELLENCE Recipe Challenge which challenged students at the Culinary Institute of America to develop a new dark chocolate bar. Featuring a mouth watering selection of rich coffee, delicate coconut flakes and of course Lindt’s premium EXCELLENCE chocolate the new creation apparently invokes a smile inducing combination of intense and familiar flavors.

The new bar was the brainchild of Meredith Walter of East Northport, New York. A Culinary Institute of America Baking and Pastry Arts student Walter’s competition effort drew on the memory of a special birthday cake she made for her mother and her uncle in which she combined both mocha and coconut.

‘As a chef, I love cooking with robust flavors, and the new Lindt Mocha Coconut dark chocolate bar exemplifies a great flavor combination and delicious sensory experience’ said the celebrity chef and restaurateur Michael Symon, who was one of the contest judges.

‘I’m proud to be a judge in the contest with Lindt and my alma mater, The Culinary Institute of America, and to taste each of the students’ hand-crafted dark chocolate bars’.

Walter’s is understandably believed to be delighted at the win.

Anthony Bourdain & Eric Ripert’s Launch ‘Good & Evil’ Chocolate Bar

15 Nov

The Good & Evil Chocolate Bar

Celebrity chefs Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert have partnered with noted chocolatier Christopher Curtin to produce a new gourmet chocolate bar.

The ‘Good & Evil’ which was officially launched during The New York Chocolate Show has apparently been ‘Inspired by the dynamic friendship of [the] renowned culinary figures’.

Made out of 72% Pure Nacional cacao from Peru, one of the rarest cacao trees on earth, which was initially thought to be extinct for over a century until it was rediscovered growing on small isolated farms within Peru, (the only place in the world where it is found), the chocolate bar features both chocolate (which represent Ripert as the ‘Good’) and cocoa nibs (for Bourdain as the ‘evil’). A high quality product, the chocolate can be bought online from Curtin’s company Éclat Chocolate for a whopping $18 a bar.

But how does it taste?

Well pretty good if the opinion of The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Rick Nichols, who described it as an ‘astonishing good chocolate’, is anything to go by.

And how should you eat it?

‘It is best to let a bite linger on the tongue’ he advises before explaining:

‘If you do, the subtle fruitiness emerges, and perhaps a woodsy hit of forest nuts, but very definitely – and differently from the beans just a year before – a bright, enchanting note of dark cherry……It was lush, almost creamy, without a trace of bitterness, or the tart, brittle waxiness that can make high-cacao bars more a chore than an easy pleasure’.
