Rehoboth Main Street will be hosting the 22nd annual Chocolate Festival on Saturday. Amateur bakers young and old alike, along with chefs from several popular downtown restaurants and bakeries, will be competing in separate categories to see who can whip up the best chocolate cookies, brownies, cakes, showpieces and more. Judging will be conducted between 9:15 and 11:30 am, and then the festival will open up to the public from 11:30 to 3:30. Tickets are $2 each, and include a single sampling. Additional samplings are 50 cents each. Tickets can be purchased at the Convention Center, at the offices of Rehoboth Main Street on Lake Avenue (behind the convention center), as well as at the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel on Olive Avenue, Cake Break on South First Street, along with the Azura and Carlton’s clothing stores on Rehoboth Avenue.

Contestants will be judged in the following categories: restaurant, bakery, professional/chef, amateur, showpiece, children under 12, showpiece for children under 12. Prizes will be awarded to these groups in these sub-categories: cookies, brownies, pies, cheesecake, candy, and “most unusual.” Rehoboth Main Street Executive Director Annmarie Westerfield says that in the past, people have dipped everything from scrapple and bacon to even jalapenos in chocolate.

Several bakeries and restaurants will be offering raffle prizes. Among them are Cake Break, Lupo Di Mare, Stingray, Snyder’s Candy, Touch of Italy and Lewes Dairy, along with Chef Dru Tevis. Raffle tickets are $5 for 20. To enter the raffle, just put a ticket or tickets in the bowl for the item you want. The winning tickets will be drawn at 3 pm, and the winners will be contacted.

The Rehoboth Co-op Preschool will be hosting kids activities during the day. Among the activities are puzzles, making chocolate necklaces and bracelets, a marshmallow toss, and even pictures with a giant chocolate bar and a life-size replica cow from Lewes Dairy.

Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival

9 Sep

Ghirardelli Square will host the 16th Annual Chocolate Festival attracting about 40,000 visitors from the Bay Area and around the world. This family-friendly event features prominent local chefs creating chocolate inventions during cooking demonstrations, live musical entertainment, children’s activities and the popular “Earthquake” Ice Cream Sundae Eating Contest. Over 30 different booths from local restaurants, bakeries and chocolate companies will provide dessert samples during the two-day event.

Ghirardelli Square hosts several signature events throughout the year to attract both local and tourist business.

Ghirardelli Square is one of the most well-known and best-loved icons of San Francisco. The enormous illuminated Ghirardelli sign and the smell of chocolate beckons over 4 million visitors per year to Ghirardelli Square.

All proceeds from the event are donated to Project Open Hand, a non-profit organization that provides food and compassion to people living HIV/AIDS, homebound and critically ill people, as well as seniors in San Francisco. For more information on Project Open Hand, visit http://www.openhand.org. In 2010 we raised over $60,000 for Project Open Hand.
