Hersheypark’s Chocolate World is planning to expand

Hersheypark’s Chocolate World have confirmed their plans to expand and upgrade the building and parking facilities within its complex over the next few years.

The popular tourist destination plans for a 3,900-square-foot expansion of the building in Phase I, primarily to improve its restroom facilities as well as a 6,580-square-foot expansion of the retail area which is scheduled to go ahead around 2016-17.

Having been approved by the Derry Township board of supervisors the parking expansion project will add 212 regular parking spaces and an additional six handicapped parking spaces to the lot. As a result of this additional parking facility the main entrance will also need to be moved.

According to Derry Township Community Development director Chuck Emerick work on the first phase of the Chocolate World project is expected to begin in 2014. 

We all love a bit of chocolate every now and then. Infact for many of us chocolate is something we have long since found very difficult to resist. Often we jokingly refer to its addictive properties to deflect from our attempts to succumb to it, but now, recent research has concluded this might actually be true.

According to researchers from the University of Michigan there is a clear link in the urge that rats have to overindulge in chocolate morsels to a part of the brain that produces a ‘natural, opium-like chemical’.

Apparently the brain has ‘more extensive systems to make individuals want to overconsume rewards than previously thought’ says head research Alexandra DiFeliceantonio, which ‘may be one of the reasons overconsumption is a problem today’.

In the study, drugs were administered to the rats to boost the part of the brain called the neostriatum. Once that part of the brain was stimulated, the rats were found to gorge themselves on more than twice the number of M&M chocolates than they otherwise would normally have eaten.

Researchers also found that enkephalin, a natural drug-like chemical that is produced in that same part of the brain, also rose when rats began to eat the candy-coated morsels.

DiFeliceantonio ‘s team were keen to point out though that the drugs didn’t make the rats like chocolate more, but rather elicited certain brain chemicals to increase their desire and impulse to eat them.

Lindt unveil a new limited edition Mocha Coconut Dark Chocolate bar

The rather delicious sounding Mocha Coconut Dark Chocolate Bar was created during a recent Lindt EXCELLENCE Recipe Challenge which challenged students at the Culinary Institute of America to develop a new dark chocolate bar. Featuring a mouth watering selection of rich coffee, delicate coconut flakes and of course Lindt’s premium EXCELLENCE chocolate the new creation apparently invokes a smile inducing combination of intense and familiar flavors.

The new bar was the brainchild of Meredith Walter of East Northport, New York. A Culinary Institute of America Baking and Pastry Arts student Walter’s competition effort drew on the memory of a special birthday cake she made for her mother and her uncle in which she combined both mocha and coconut.

‘As a chef, I love cooking with robust flavors, and the new Lindt Mocha Coconut dark chocolate bar exemplifies a great flavor combination and delicious sensory experience’ said the celebrity chef and restaurateur Michael Symon, who was one of the contest judges.

‘I’m proud to be a judge in the contest with Lindt and my alma mater, The Culinary Institute of America, and to taste each of the students’ hand-crafted dark chocolate bars’.

Walter’s is understandably believed to be delighted at the win.
