One of America’s most popular confections, Butterfinger is a much loved bar of candy which comprises of a flaky, orange coloured compound centre that is not too dissimilar in texture, flavour and taste to what Australian’s know as chocolate covered peanut brittle.

Invented by one Drew Seibold of Florence, Wisconsin and initially manufactured by the Curtiss Candy Company in 1923 who also made Baby Ruth chocolate bars, Butterfinger is is now produced by Nestlé.

A unique chocolate bar, in that there isn’t really anything else like it on the market, Butterfinger’s are cherished both for their peanut butter taste and also the crumbly sensation that explodes on to your tongue when you bite into one.

Famously promoted by Bart Simpson and other characters from The Simpsons, who collectively appeared in more than 150 advertisements for the product between 1990 and 2001, each advert finished with Bart yelling the infamous straplines of ‘Bite my Butterfinger!’, ‘Nobody better lay a finger on my Butterfinger!’ and ‘Nothin’ like a Butterfinger’. In an especially clever piece of marketing most of these commercials were released on The Simpsons DVD sets as bonus features along with other commercials.

Only available in Australia from specialist stores like Moo-Lolly-Bar, Butterfinger also has a sister product, Butterfinger Crisp bars, which take the form of a chocolate-covered wafer cookie, filled with a Butterfinger flavoured cream and covered in chocolate, which many people actually believe tastes better than the original.
