Two men detained over illegal stash of Kinder Eggs

A not so sweet tale for two Seattle men who claim they spent over two hours in a Canadian border detention center after a routine search from US border agents discovered some illegal Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs in their car.

According to this report, Brandon Loo and Christopher Sweeney decided to bring home the treats for family and friends during their recent trip to Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada.

The two men claim they did not know Kinder Surprises, which is famous for having a toy in the middle, were illegal in the USA because of the risk of small children choking on the small plastic toys. However importing them can lead to a substantial fine.

Mr Sweeney who eventually got off with a warning along with Mr Loo claims the bust was a waste of both his time and that of the agents involved.

Although the US Customs and Border Protection agency declined to comment about the case they have previously stated on their website that the popular chocolate treat can’t be imported legally. Despite this last year the agency is reputed to have seized more than 60,000 Kinder Eggs from the baggage of those crossing the border as well as international mail shipments.
