A San Francisco institution going back to the days of the Gold Rush, Ghirardelli is best known for its delicious chocolate range though it does have a small chain of ice cream shops just outside the Bay Area.

Replacing the old tortilla factory, Ghirardelli is located in a two-story red brick building in the Pacific Wharf area of Disney California Adventure Park. Bordering the soon-to-open Cars Land, the opening of Ghirardelli significantly increases the range of sundaes available throughout the Disneyland Resort.

Currently their menu contains 15 different flavours, most coming with a choice of dark or milk chocolate fudge that is melted on the premises. Several of them have iconic San Francisco names such as the Gold Rush, a mix of vanilla ice cream with melted peanut butter and hot fudge, the Golden Gate, a delicious version of the banana split and the Haight Ashberry. A sensational strawberry cheesecake and vanilla ice cream with sliced strawberries and chocolate-covered blueberries.

It will be interesting to see how successful the store becomes.

After more than 80 years in Illinois, Springfield based Candy Manufacturer, Pease’s Candy has announced plans to move around 75% of its entire candy production to St. Louis, Missouri.

Citing the recession, high gasoline prices and a series of increases to the state’s minimum wage as the primary reasons, this decision has been taken in lieu of the company’s recent merger with the St. Louis-based candy company Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate.

Despite closing one of its Springfield Stores just over a year ago, Pease’s three remaining retail outlets in Springfield will continue as is under the terms of the merger. Pease’s owner Rob Flesher confirmed he discussed the idea of joint production with Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate three years ago, but could not reach agreement with them. The idea was only revived when the St. Louis based firm floated the idea of opening a new production facility in St. Louis.

The new 30,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility is Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate’s largest expansion in 31 years of business said Dan Abel Sr. founder and chief executive of the company.

Though it is moving most of its production to Missouri, Pease’s Candy has no plans to change any of the recipes for its chocolates, caramels and roasted nuts.

‘Nothing is going to change other than the location where the product is made’ confirmed Flesher. ‘It’s going to look the same, it’s going to taste the same, it’s going to have the same ingredients and the same focus on quality’.
