A chocolate lover’s dream at Bristol Public Library

Chocolate Lovers DreamFrom chocolate bonbons to chocolate-dipped strawberries, the smell of chocolate was enough to take your breath away Friday morning at Bristol Public Library.

It was a chocolate lover’s dream.

For the past six years, the library has partnered with the Southeast Culinary and Hospitality College on the annual Candy Contest. The event is put on by the Bristol Public Library Foundation, and is sponsored by a number of local businesses.

“This event started out as a staff event nearly six years ago, and then we branched out into the community to bring visitors a unique look at chocolate,” said Sarah Hutchinson, marketing director for the library.

Participants from the community were asked to submit their favorite chocolate recipe and judges assessed them on overall taste and presentation. In the 13- to 17- year-old division, Brianna Fleenor won with her crispy delight fudge.

In the adult category, third place went to Joan Hutton for her faux berries. Second place was awarded to Milani Saieh-Gomez for her chocolate coconut bonbons. Coming out on top with first place and best in show was Judy Gass with her decadent caramel, chocolate-covered pretzels.

“The chocolate contest is always a fun event. This is my third year of attendance. It’s always a good educational experience as well,” said, visitor Charlotte Carter.

In addition to the chocolate sampling, Chef Norman Brilliant from the Southeast Culinary and Hospitality College did several demonstrations, including chocolate truffles, marshmallows and even chocolate bowls made from water balloons.

“The chocolate contest has been a staple here at the library for quite some time. We really wanted to get the community involved, and promote what good events we have here at the Bristol Public Library,” said Foundation Executive Director Anita Foster-Machado.

The winning recipes will be posted on the library’s website, for those who want to indulge their sweet tooth with their own creations.
