Real men eat manly chocolates

Jen Winter of Koko ChocolatesDouble-smoked bacon, Scotch, espresso and a hint of maple are just some of the manly flavours found in the decadent artisan chocolates created by Ottawa’s Jennifer Winter for November’s Movember campaign.

The mouth-watering, handmade chocolates are part of Winter’s efforts to raise money for prostate cancer research.

The owner of Koko Chocolates, who has a production facility in a McKellar Park home, is selling limited edition chocolates featuring four exclusive flavours in each eightpiece box for $18. There’s Double Smoked Bacon, a dark chocolate ganache infused with Aubrey’s Meats’ double-smoked bacon and a hint of maple; Espresso Dark, a chocolate ganache infused with Kafia Coffee’s organic espresso blend; Scotch Milk, a chocolate ganache infused with Glenmorangie single malt Scotch whisky; and the Koko, a 75-per-cent Venezuelan dark chocolate ganache with acidic hints and fruit overtones.

Winter decided to raise awareness and funds for the cause after her father was diagnosed with prostate cancer a year ago.

“He survived his battle and this is my way of honouring his fight. My husband has participated in Movember in the past and I thought it would be a fun way of getting involved.”

Koko is also partnering with Ottawa chef and restaurateur Marc Lepine to host a Movember fundraising dinner at Lepine’s Atelier on Rochester Street in Little Italy on Nov. 29 for $150 per person. For the evening, Lepine is preparing a special tasting menu that will feature several courses, including Koko chocolates paired with Ontario wines provided by Cave Spring Cellars.

Winter purchased her business from good friend Lori Sword, who started it in 2008, but subsequently moved to Australia.

“At the time, I was working as a market research consultant and helped Lori with her business. When she was about to sell it, I couldn’t imagine someone else buying it,” says Winter, who trained as a chocolatier at Callebaut Academy in Montreal.

Winter’s chocolate truffles are made with premium Belgian chocolates, natural ingredients and no added preservatives. She enjoys offering unique flavour combinations such as truffles with spicy Thai chili, and vanilla rum, and creates four seasonal themed products a year.

She also offers dairy-free and vegan chocolates and, on special request, will make chocolate truffles using rice milk or coconut instead of dairy products.

Winter also attends several shows a year, including the monthly Urban Craft market at the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre and Nov. 18-20 at the Glebe Community Centre’s Craft and Artisan Fair and Sandy Hill’s One & Only Arts and Craft Fair on Nov. 20.
