Taye Diggs writes children’s book ‘Chocolate Me!’ to help kids

Taye Diggs is known as a Hollywood hunk, but the actor says he wasn’t always comfortable in his own skin.

The star of TV’s “Private Practice” spent time at a Manhattan bookstore Wednesday reading his new children’s book “Chocolate Me!” and encouraging kids to be embrace who they are.

“I lived in a neighborhood where nobody else looked like me,” said Diggs, 40, who grew up in upstate Rochester. “My mother took me aside and basically told me to embrace my differences.”

Diggs read his book, illustrated by childhood pal Shane Evans, to about 60 parents and their children at Books of Wonder in the Flatiron District.

He said he hopes his book inspires children to be proud of their ethnicity, regardless of their skin color. He said the message is even more important to him since he became a father in 2009.

“Now that I have a child, it makes things like this even more rich,” he said of yesterday’s reading.

Diggs’ book, released Tuesday, was inspired by a poem he wrote while in college at Syracuse University.

“It’s been an amazing journey,” he said.

Leonore Gonzalez, 40, said she felt Diggs’ book was so important that she drove her 4-year-old, Kennedi, to the reading all the way from their home in Easton, Pa.

“Last week, my daughter came home and she was unhappy with her complexion,” Gonzalez said. “When I saw this, I figured what a great opportunity to expose my daughter to the book. Maybe she can learn something from it.”
