Sports Authority Removes Candy From StoresSports Authority removes candy from its 465 stores nationwide “in order to better promote healthy lifestyles.”

The company said it offers nutritious snacks and beverages from a variety of vendors including PowerBar, Clif/Luna, Myoplex, Honey Stingers, Muscle Milk, Nature Valley, Nuun and GU as alternatives to candy bars.

“This is just one of many initiatives we have under way to attack obesity, especially in our youth,” said Jeff Schumacher, Chief Marketing officer of Sports Authority. “At Sports Authority, we believe in all things sporting good, and are committed to the overall health and well-being of our customers.”

Sales of energy bars rose more than 50 percent in 2010, to $114 million, according to the trade publication Supermarket News.

The word “energy” on any label simply means that the food supplies calories, not that eating it will make you more energetic. Some energy bars have no more nutritional value than a candy bar, according to critics.
