Dr Pepper

The soda manufacturer produced commercials featuring the movie creature Godzilla, where citizens of a Japanese town offered Dr Pepper as a libation.

 

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

In the 1970s and 1980s, a series of commercials was run for Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups featuring situations in which two people, one eating peanut butter and one eating chocolate, collided. One person would exclaim, “You got your peanut butter in my chocolate!” and the other would exclaim, “You got your chocolate in my peanut butter!”. They would then sample the mixture and remark on the great taste, tying in with the slogan “Two great tastes that taste great together.

American Chocolate. Available to buy online in Australia from http://www.moolollybar.com.au. To go there just click on this photo!Did you know that 65% of all American Candy bars have been around for more than 60 years? Or that Wrigley’s Spearmint Chewing Gum was first launched in 1893?

Probably not.

So below is a brief timeline of the history of USA Chocolate courtesy of Candy Favourites (which incidentally is a wonderful site in case you weren’t previously aware). I’ll bet you did not know American Chocolate had such a rich legacy?

1854 The first packaged box of Whitman’s chocolate debuts thus being the advent of boxed chocolates as we know them today.

1880s The Wunderle Candy Company creates candy corn. In 1898, Goelitz Confectionery Company began making candy corn and has made this Halloween favorite longer than any other company. It remains one of the best selling Halloween candies of all times.

1896 Tootsie Rolls debut, introduced by Leo Hirshfield of New York who named them after his daughter’s nickname, “Tootsie”.

1900 Milton S. Hershey of Lancaster , PA introduces the first Hershey Milk Chocolate Bar. As one of the oldest American Candy Bars still in existence, it deserves to be called “The Great American Chocolate Bar”

1906 Hershey Kisses appear in their famous silver foil wraps.

1913 Goo Goo Clusters, a Southern favorite, was the first bar to combine milk chocolate, caramel, marshmallow and peanuts.

1920 The Baby Ruth candy bar is introduced and is named for President Grover Cleveland’s daughter not the famous baseball player.

1926 Milk Duds are introduced into the market.

1928 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are launched across the country. It remains one of the best selling candy bars of all times!

1930 M&M Mars introduces the Snickers Bar which, to date, is the best selling candy bar of all time. It was named after one of the family’s beloved horses…

1932 M&M Mars debuts the 3 Musketeers Bar, made as a three-flavor bar featuring chocolate, vanilla and strawberry nougat. This flavor combination would last for thirteen (13) years.

1936 In a break from tradition, William Luden, one of the creators of Cough Drops, introduces the 5th Avenue Candy Bar.

1939 Hershey’s Miniatures chocolate bars debut.

1941 “M&M’s” Plain Chocolate Candies are introduced in response to depressed chocolate sales in summer. Fifty-nine years later, M&M Mars shortened the name to M&M’s.

1945 M&M Mars decides to change the formula in the 3 Musketeers Bar to all chocolate.

1949 Junior Mints were introduced.

1958 Candy Necklaces, a retro candy classic, are introduced.

1960 In an effort to create a healthy candy product, M&M Mars Starburst Fruit Chews are introduced and later fortified with Vitamin C.

1976 Herman Goelitz Company introduces the first individually flavored Jelly Bean known as Jelly Bellys.

1978 Fueled by the overwhelming success of Reese Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey’s introduces Reese Pieces.

1980 Herman Goelitz Company introduces the first American-made gummi bears and gummi worms. Traditionally, these candies were imported from Europe.

1994 M&M Mars introduces Starburst Jelly Beans.

The average American citizen eats 5.45 kilos of chocolate annually. Amazingly this is second only to the Swiss who consume a staggering 11kg of chocolate per person each year.

American chocolate manufacturers use approx 1.5 billion pounds of milk each year, only the cheese and ice cream industries use more.

America produces more chocolate than any other country in the world but Switzerland consumes the most. The United Kingdom is second.
